Accuracy with A Stencil Cutter
Dee Marie

Defined Tag:

Stencil can be made from several materials such as paper, cardboard, or film, and certain areas have been cut out or removed. By laying the stencil on a surface, you apply color to the stencil which passes through the openings and prints on the material below. To the amateur, the cutting and designing of stencils appears to be 2 different processes. However, someone with more experience with stencils realizes all real stencil designs begin with the process of cutting. Therefore, the secret of stencil designing is in the proper cut-out patterns or ties. There is not another way of learning how to do the patterns except by gaining experience through cutting. You can see why a stencil cutter is important and can perform this very important function.

The best stencil cutter is one that revolves freely which makes it somewhat easier to cut a curved line on a stencil. The short shaft of the cutter provides optimal tip control along with cutting precision, and this makes it ideal for cutting elaborate and larger patterns. As the cutter is primarily concerned with the outline only, the other elements of the art sketch, such as the lettering and other design elements do not need to be filled in. To the extent of the experience of the artist, a degree of precision can be accomplished using a stencil cutter.

One way that designers work with cutting is through designing with a lead pencil, charcoal, or a brush. Many stencil designers get great results by first drawing their intended design with charcoal. Later they fill in the details with the stencil cutter during the process of actually cutting the stencil. This step helps the stencil artist identify any weaknesses in their design, thereby allowing them to improve the overall design as they go..

Art supply and hardware stores are good sources for a large range of stencils. You can also create your own stencils by purchasing a stencil book or searching the internet for designs. All you need to get started is a a stencil patter, masking tape, mylar sheets, and a stencil cutter. The cutter will need to be plugged in prior to use, so that it is hot enough to make the cuts easily. The stencil cutter is specifically made for cutting stencil patterns easier and faster from Mylar, plastic, and materials up to seven millimeters thick.
